Contemporary landscape design in Auchenflower – backyard

Straight lines and square edges enhance this formal and contemporary Brisbane garden and complement the clean lines of the building.

Drainage, contour manipulation, vegetation choice and mulching were the solutions to resolving excessive overland water flow.  These were the keystones to this design.  The raised podium at the end of the narrow, unconventional shaped block helped to create depth and width.  The podium was raised to allow water flow and to allow a sense of elevation and formality.  The podium aims to draw the family through the garden, maximising the whole area.  It also doubles as a screen hiding the utility area of clothes line, compost heap and worm farm.

The water is the strongest element in the garden as the look, sound and movement has a profound effect on the senses.  The safe and shallow water feature linked to the entertaining area, covered with a semi shade structure, will generate calmness and develop a sense of closeness and intimacy.

Planting palette includes DORYANTHE excels (Gymea Lily), BRACHYCHITON acerifolius (Illawarra Flame Tree), LOMANDRA Tilga,  ZOYSIA tenuifolia (Korean Velvet Grass) and BAMBUSA textilis Gracillis (Slender Weave Bamboo).
