This plant is a striking addition to any landscape with its architectural foliage and stunning red flower spikes. Suited to many styles of garden, it is at home in Australiana, contemporary or oriental themes. It is a dominating focal point in the landscape (particularly when in flower) or as a unique vegetative screen.
1m long sword-like leaves create a strong presence in the garden. Its red flower spike grows to 2-4m tall and is best suited to be viewed from an elevated position. Adapted to grow in both full sun and part shade, Doryanthes is a slow grower but responds well to regular fertilising.
This large tussock-like plant produces flowers that attract nectar-feeding birds, and provide shelter and nest building materials for smaller species. Flowering in winter, it is a warm relief from the cold climate.
This plant has taken the place of the NZ Flax which was recently very popular until the Queensland drought passed (flax seemed to fail due to the returned humid environment). Simular in form, the Doryanthes are drought hardy, and are adapted to coastal Queensland’s humid climate.
